Mammillaria senilis |
Flowers red up to 7cm long occurs naturally at high sometimes snow covered altitudes |
Often found in collections as Mamillopsis senilis this Mexican plant is found in it`s native mountainous habitat at elevations of up to nearly 10000ft (3000m).In winter the temperature in this harsh environment drops to freezing point and the plant is often totally covered by deep snow. Its body is a mass of gleaming white spines and produces offsets in abundance. The flowers are particularly striking in nature being up to 7cm long and 6cm wide.I have found that if the plant is given a sufficiently cool/cold winter rest then it flowers very well indeed see photo!.I have also found that as long as they are not subjected to too much heat the flowers will last up to a week or more.Flowering period begins around April |
