Known as the `Silver Torch` cactus this distinctive looking plant originates from the Bolivian mountains at an altitude of around 5000 ft (1750m).It`s white spines protect it from the strong light at these altitudes.Starting life as a single stem it later often produces off shoots from the base.Reaching a height of up to around 5ft (1.5m) in old age. It usually flowers for the first time at a height of about 20inches(50cm).The flowers are red and tubular in shape.In the right situation growth can be swift so long as sufficient water light heat and ventilation are provided |
